What is the difference between Qigong and Tai Chi?
Qigong is a broad practice that has many branches, like an ancient tree. Tai Chi Chuan is a form of Dao Yin Qigong, which means "movement" and in Tai Chi the movements have a martial arts application. Each Tai Chi movement is designed to defend, deflect, pull in, push away, or attack. The movements of Dao Yin Qigong we will practice called Wei Dan Qigong and are entirely focused on health, optimizing energy levels and the function of the body. Nei Dan Qigong, also called Internal Alchemy, is a meditative form of Qigong that focuses on gathering Qi from the Universe and circulating it through our bodies. We will also practice Nei Dan Qigong in each class. Other notable Qigong practices are Qigong Massage, and Medical Qigong.
Why it's important to come to class even if 'you don't feel like it'.
I emphasize to my students that when your energy is low and you just don't feel like leaving the house, it is still important to come to class! Even if you sit in the corner and just be there, you will benefit from the energy of the Qigong happening around you. It can be very beneficial to simply follow along in your mind, visualizing yourself doing the movements. Science has shown that visualization activates the same neural pathways as actually performing the action and is 25% effective as exercise. So don't stay home!
